About species
The eastern gorilla has become increasingly endangered since the 1990s, and the species was listed as critically endangered in September 2016 as its population continued to decrease.
The gorilla cam shows the Grauer's gorillas inside their 39-acre forest habitat at GRACE.
The forest is former wild gorilla habitat making it ideal for the orphans to practice skills needed for the wild such as foraging, nest building, and coordinating group travel.
GRACE is located in a remote part of Democratic Republic of Congo within a transition zone between the lowland forests of the Congo Basin and the highlands of the Albertine Rift, both areas of incredible biodiversity.
GRACE is an award-winning sanctuary that provides emergency veterinary care and rehabilitation for rescued gorillas, including a chance to live in a group with other orphans, forming a surrogate family.
The gorillas are orphans rescued after being captured during poaching events that killed their families. Gorillas are targeted by hunters for their meat.
All of the gorillas at GRACE are Grauer's gorillas, which only live in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are critically endangered with only 3,800 left in the wild.
Grauer’s gorillas are threatened by poaching and habitat destruction, both of which have been exacerbated by decades of war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the only place where they are found.
The 14 gorillas at GRACE live in surrogate family groups in natural forest habitats where they can practice survival skills so they can prepare to return to the wild one day.
Gorillas forage for the majority of their food on their own in the forest.
